Are you tired of shaving, plucking and waxing? These conventional methods of hair removal are harsh for the skin. The most recent method of hair removal is laser technology. Professional laser treatments help you to avoid all these bumps, knicks and cuts. Moreover, they also give a long-lasting result.
There are many laser machines out there. Only an experienced provider will be able to make the call as to which laser is best for you and your skin type. An experienced provider will know the right settings to use in order for the laser light to be absorbed by the melanin in the hair. The hair gets hot and the heat damages the hair follicles and disables it and destroys the stem cells to prevent regrowth.
At Surani Clinic we perform a test on an area to be treated two days prior in order to make sure there are no untoward reactions to the laser. We also find test spots are important as it also mentally prepares an individual and to assist with understanding how the process works.
Before beginning your journey toward laser hair removal treatment, it is important to know your skin type. Also, it is important to know the best type of laser for your particular skin type. Always remember that not every skin is the same. Therefore, not every laser machine is suitable for each person. The most common laser hair removal machines are Alexandrite, Diode and the Nd Yag as well as Intense Pulse Light (IPL).
Classification of skin type to get the best laser hair removal results
The Fitzpatrick scale is a universally recognized method to categorize skin types. This scale depends on the amount of melanin pigment in the skin and the effect of exposure to ultraviolet light. This scale classifies skin into six types. With the help of this scale, professionals can determine which laser is the safest and most effective to achieve a hair-free goal without any burns.
Fitzpatrick Scale Skin Types
Let us discuss the six types of skin according to the Fitzpatrick scale which will help you make the best decision before starting your sessions with a professional.
Type 1 – This type of person usually has red or blonde hair. Such people have a very pale complexion and has freckles. These people also tend to burn easily when exposed to the sun and never tan.
Type 2 – This type of person has chestnut or dark blonde hair and pale skin. Their skin can also burn easily and tans minimally.
Type 3 – This type of person has dark brown hair and light brown skin which can tan gradually and burn moderately.
Type 4 – Such people can tan easily and get burn minimally. Type 4 is most common among Asians, Hispanics and those of Middle East descent.
Type 5 – People have brown skin. This skin type tans easily and rarely burns.
Type 6 – Such people have dark brown or black skin. Sunburn is rare among such people. However, their skin can darken on exposure to sunlight.
Best Laser Machines for Different Skin Types
Alexandrite works at a wavelength of 755 nanometers. It is ideal for skin types 1 to 4. It is not suitable for darker skins (skin types 5 and 6).
This laser machine works at a wavelength of 810 nanometers and is suitable for all skin types.
- Long pulsed Nd Yag (1064)
This laser works at a wavelength of 1064 nanometers. It is suitable for all skin types and is the gold standard for darker skin individuals.
At Surani Clinic we use a programmable ProWave 770 hair removal devise for skin type 1 to 4 and also Nd Yag laser for skin type 5 and 6 which is a gold standard for darker skin tones.
The ProWave 770 infrared handpiece is neither a laser nor a traditional ‘intense pulsed light’ flashlamp, but rather a third category refining the best of both. It is programmable to get the best results for each skin type. The Prowave can treat a wide range of skin types and tones safely and effectively.
In my opinion for light-skinned individuals, an Alexandrite or Diode is recommended while for darker-skinned individuals Our programmable wavelength Prowave devise allows us to switch from Alexandrite-like to Diode-like and an Nd Yag-like settings. Nd Yag long pulsed is the gold standard to minimize risks of post-treatment blistering and pigmentary changes. I have not found any laser to be effective in permanently reducing very blond or white hair.
